OPF/GPF Delete on VAG - MG1CP007, MG1CS047 - Golf 8 GTI/R
What is OPF/GPF?
The Otto Particulate Filter (OPF), also known as Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF), is the petrol equivalent of the diesel DPF. Introduced with Euro 6d regulations, the OPF captures soot particles from direct injection petrol engines. While these engines produce far less soot than diesels, the filter still accumulates particulates over time and requires periodic regeneration.
Affected Vehicles and ECUs
- MG1CS047 - VW Golf 8 GTI (245hp), Audi A3 40 TFSI (8Y), SEAT Leon Cupra, Skoda Octavia RS - EA888 Gen3B with OPF
- MG1CP007 - VW Golf 8 R (320hp), Audi S3 (8Y), SEAT Leon Cupra VZ310, VW Tiguan R, VW Arteon R - EA888 EVO4 with OPF
Why Remove the OPF?
The OPF creates exhaust restriction that limits peak power output and affects exhaust note character. Performance enthusiasts removing the OPF typically see 5-15hp improvement at the wheels, significantly improved exhaust sound, better turbo spool-up due to reduced backpressure, and improved heat management in the exhaust system. For competition and track use, OPF removal is standard practice.
OPF Delete Technical Process
- OPF soot loading model deactivated
- OPF regeneration strategy removed (which normally enriches the mixture to raise exhaust temperatures)
- Differential pressure sensor monitoring disabled
- Exhaust temperature management adjusted
- All OPF-related DTCs cleared
- Lambda off typically included as the OPF integrates with the catalyst
Combining with Performance Tuning
OPF delete is a common component of Stage 2 tuning packages for VAG EA888 engines. Combined with a downpipe replacement, intercooler upgrade, and ECU tune, the Golf 8 R can produce 400+ hp and the Golf 8 GTI can reach 320+ hp. The OPF delete ensures unrestricted exhaust flow to support these power levels.
