Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC/AdBlue System
Mercedes brands their AdBlue system as BlueTEC. It was one of the first manufacturers to widely adopt SCR technology, starting with larger vehicles and eventually applying it across the entire diesel range. While Mercedes systems are generally well-engineered, they are not immune to failures, especially in high-mileage or commercially operated vehicles.
ECU and Model Coverage
- EDC17CP46 - Mercedes C200d/C220d/C250d (W205), E200d/E220d/E250d (W213), GLC 220d/250d (X253), V-Class/Vito 116/119 CDI (W447) - OM651/OM654 engines
- EDC17CP57 - Mercedes Sprinter 211-516 CDI (W906/W907), Vito 109-116 CDI (W639/W447 early), Citan (W415) - OM651 engine
Common Mercedes AdBlue Failures
Mercedes vehicles commonly experience these AdBlue issues:
- NOx sensor failure - Mercedes uses expensive OEM sensors (400-700 EUR each)
- AdBlue dosing module failure - The combined pump/heating/injector unit (1,200+ EUR)
- "No Restart in X km" countdown - Mercedes is particularly strict with immobilization
- SCR catalyst efficiency codes - P20EE, P229F, P2BAD triggering workshop visits
Technical Solution
Mercedes AdBlue removal on EDC17 platforms involves disabling the complete SCR aftertreatment monitoring. The modification removes NOx sensor processing, AdBlue injection control, SCR efficiency monitoring, tank level and quality sensing, and critically, the immobilization countdown that can leave vehicles stranded. Both ECU variants support OBD-based modification.
Benefits
Mercedes owners eliminate the expensive BlueTEC maintenance cycle, avoid the strict immobilization system, and save significant money on NOx sensors and dosing modules. For Sprinter operators, this is often the difference between profitable operation and constant repair bills.
