What Are Diagnostic Trouble Codes?
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are standardized codes stored by the vehicle's ECU when it detects a system malfunction. Following the OBD-II standard, DTCs use a format like P0420 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold) or P2002 (diesel particulate filter efficiency below threshold). These codes trigger warning lights and, in some cases, activate protective measures like limp mode.
DTC Structure Explained
Every DTC follows a specific structure:
- First character: P (Powertrain), B (Body), C (Chassis), U (Network)
- Second character: 0 (Generic/SAE), 1 (Manufacturer-specific)

When is DTC Removal Appropriate?
DTC removal is appropriate when the underlying system has been intentionally modified (DPF delete, EGR off, etc.), when a sensor has been physically removed as part of a modification, when false or phantom codes persist after a repair, or when the DTC is triggered by an aftermarket component.
