BMW OPF Delete - MEVD17.2.3, MG1CS003, MG1CS024
BMW OPF/GPF System
BMW introduced the Otto Particulate Filter (OPF) across their petrol range starting from 2018 to comply with Euro 6d-TEMP and later Euro 6d regulations. The OPF is integrated into the exhaust system, typically within the downpipe assembly. For BMW M cars and performance models, the OPF represents a significant restriction in the exhaust flow path.
ECU Types and Vehicle Applications
- MEVD17.2.3 - BMW M2 Competition (F87 N/CS, S55), M3 (F80 LCI, S55), M4 (F82/F83 LCI, S55), M4 GTS
- MG1CS003 - BMW M340i (G20, B58), M440i (G22, B58), X3 M40i (G01, B58), Z4 M40i (G29, B58)
- MG1CS024 - BMW M3/M4 (G80/G82, S58), X3M/X4M (F97/F98, S58), M2 (G87, S58)
Impact on BMW Performance
The OPF on BMW performance engines creates measurable exhaust backpressure that affects peak power and turbo efficiency. On the S58 engine (G80 M3/G82 M4), removing the OPF alongside a downpipe upgrade typically yields 15-25hp at the wheels. For the B58 engine (M340i, M440i), gains of 10-15hp are typical. Beyond power, the exhaust note becomes significantly more aggressive and characterful.
OPF Delete Process
- OPF monitoring and soot model deactivation
- Regeneration strategy removal (prevents mixture enrichment for OPF cleaning)
- Backpressure sensor logic disabled
- Temperature sensor plausibility adjusted
- Associated DTCs removed
- Often combined with Lambda off for complete downpipe solution
Track and Competition Use
For BMW M owners using their cars on track, OPF removal is essential. The regeneration cycle can cause power fluctuations during spirited driving, and the additional heat generated in the OPF can contribute to heat soak issues. Race-prepared M3/M4 builds always include OPF delete as a fundamental modification.
